The developer, Randee LLC (affiliated with an unnamed Fortune 100 technology firm), officially withdrew the application in October 2025.
The primary reason for the withdrawal was to “pause and reevaluate” the project following unanimous denial by the Howell Township Planning Commission and immense community backlash.
Here is a breakdown of the factors that led to the withdrawal:
🛑 Reasons for Application Withdrawal
- Planning Commission Denial
On September 23, 2025, the Howell Township Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny the rezoning request. The core reason cited by the commissioners was their unwillingness to change the township’s Master Plan, which designates the 1,077-acre site as largely agricultural. The commissioners were not comfortable setting a precedent that contradicted the long-term vision of the township. - Overwhelming Community Opposition
The proposal sparked a huge public protest. Hundreds of residents packed the planning commission meeting, which lasted over seven hours, voicing concerns about:
- Water Resources: The massive water demands of data centers and the potential impact on local groundwater and public supply.
- Energy and Utility Costs: Fears that the facility’s immense power usage would strain the grid and drive up electricity costs for residents.
- Lack of Transparency: The refusal by the developer to publicly name the Fortune 100 corporate owner (speculated to be Meta).
- Farmland Loss and Noise/Light Pollution.
- Developer Reevaluation
Following the Planning Commission’s denial, the developer (Randee LLC) and Howell Township jointly requested the withdrawal of the application from the Livingston County Planning Commission’s agenda. The stated reason was for the developer to “re-evaluate their steps forward,” likely intending to revise the proposal to address the significant water, noise, and zoning concerns raised by the township and residents.
Though the current application is withdrawn, Howell Township officials have indicated that discussions may continue, and the developer could potentially resubmit a revised proposal in the future.
